What to Expect
When joining a parent support group, you can develop long-lasting relationships with other parents who experience similar issues. Even if the context of your children is not the same, your connection to someone who is struggling to navigate the complexity of raising gifted kids can feel validating. Our groups are partially psychoeducational so you can learn exactly what giftedness really means in the contexts of your lives. The other part is a supportive process element that helps parents speak to what they are up against in their own lives.
What Makes Us Different
Our team utlizies a collaborative approach. While one clinican works with the child, another can be available to support the parents. An alternative is the parent support group. Our groups are designed to focus on the parents themselves. Sometimes even outside the context of their children. Imagine that!
Parenting a gifted child can be tough, and having a support network of others who understand this specific issues is crucial to alleviating the stress. However, we teach everyone that comes into our practice that developing the self is tantamount to helping the others in your life. The parent support groups help parents with their gifted kids, yes, but also how to develop and grow themselves.
Limitations
Sometimes the issues presented to parents are too complex for a support group. In this case we would highly recommend a more direct approach with separate parent sessions to help "right the ship" before engaging in a group setting. As with our other groups, we don't create a group because we have the numbers. We select parents specifically for this type of engagement. It has to be a good fit.
